“When you’ve got a child who is struggling or ill, what you want is for them to get better as soon as possible. With Equipsme we were able to help our son do exactly that.”
An Equipsme member was concerned about his son’s breathing – particularly at night. When a local GP suggested adenoids might be part of the problem, the family turned to their Equipsme plan to get it sorted out as quickly as possible.
“My son, 4, has always had trouble sleeping. He often wakes up and comes into us, which is when we noticed he seemed to be struggling to breath – particularly through his nose.
“We went to our NHS GP who suspected adenoids might be a contributing factor. He suggested a referral to a pediatric Ear Nose and Throat specialist.”
Adenoids are small lumps of tissue at the back of the throat behind the nose. They're part of the immune system and help fight infection. Enlarged adenoids are fairly common in children - and can cause a variety of health problems.
Adenoidectomy
The Equipsme dad continues: “We actually went to the Equipsme GP service for an Open Referral letter, and contacted AXA Health to check we were covered. They signed it all off and helped us arrange an appointment with a consultant very quickly.
“As we expected, the consultant recommended an adenoidectomy, but one that left some tissue behind so the immune system benefits wouldn’t be completely removed, too.
“The first surgery slot they suggested was literally only a month later, but we needed to arrange time off and make sure we had everything in place for his recovery. He has some additional needs and we wanted to make sure we could make the process as easy as possible for him. We ended up choosing a slightly later date - and just having that flexibility was incredibly useful.
Speed and flexibility
“It’s very scary to have a child go under anesthetic when they’re so little, but the operation went really well. Although the first couple of weeks after recovery were a bit rough, we soon started to see a difference. His appetite improved, and we are seeing some improvements in his sleep – slowly but surely.
“I know the NHS would have got to us eventually, but the speed and flexibility we got from going through Equipsme really was invaluable. When you’ve got a child who is struggling or ill, what you want is for them to get better as soon as possible. With Equipsme we were able to help our son do exactly that.”

About Equipsme plans
Our client testimonials and employee case studies are from people who’ve had a really good experience with Equipsme. We think they help others understand what we do and how we do it. But it’s also really important to understand what we don’t do. We’re committed to being completely up-front and transparent about our plans. For example, terms and conditions will apply (depending on the benefits described in this case study), such as the exclusion of pre-existing conditions in the three years before cover starts, long-term/chronic conditions, and private cancer treatment (once a cancer diagnosis has been made).
