The new PSA test measures the level of Prostate Specific Antigen in someone’s blood, and can help identify men who may need further investigation for prostate cancer.

How common is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer 1 for men in the UK, with 1 in 8 getting it at some point in their lives. Those over 50, black men, and those with a family history of prostate cancer are more at risk.
Who is the test recommended for?
Anyone with a prostate, over 50s, and over 45s with high risk factors.
It can also help those who need to monitor PSA levels following advice from a GP or specialist.
What does the PSA test do?
According to Thriva, the test can:
- Help detect prostate cancer before symptoms develop.
- Help identify fast-growing prostate cancer at an earlier stage, when treatment may be more effective.
- Allow you to track PSA levels over time, particularly if you're at increased risk.
What doesn’t the PSA test do?
Thriva is clear that:
- A PSA test cannot diagnose prostate cancer on its own.
- A raised PSA result does not necessarily mean cancer is present.
- Some prostate cancers may not cause a raised PSA.
- If your PSA is elevated, you may need further investigations arranged by your GP or a specialist, such as an MRI scan or biopsy.
How does the PSA test work?
- Go to your portal or App and click on the Health Check icon.
- Depending on your cover level, you may be able to order one from a choice of health checks, including the PSA one – or use a discount code to buy it at a reduced price.
- Order your home blood collection kit, which is usually delivered in 1–2 working days.
- Collect your sample using Thriva's AutoDraw upper-arm blood collection device.
- Return your sample using the prepaid packaging.
- You’ll get your results in as little as 48 hours after the laboratory receives your sample, including a doctor-reviewed report and guidance on what to do next.
